Lake Thaw was inspired by Hume Lake California at the end of winter when the ice began to melt. Painted in egg tempera on panel, I was captured by this scene as I saw the far shore reflecting on the lake with two different effects. Close to shore the reflection is crisp and clear while the reflection continuing on the ice is softer and muted, almost powdery, while keeping the true reflection. Egg tempera was the best choice of medium in achieving these outcomes.
