I have painted small demonstration paintings of this cottage for my workshop many times. When I decided to paint a larger studio work, however, there was a lot more to sort than I had imagined. For instance, in real life, there are some very awkward rooflines to the right side of the picture plane. Most of those I totally eliminated. Another issue was that once this was so large, the intense color I had used in the smaller pieces was overwhelming, looking more like just a single square of turquoise than anything else. I was forced to find ways to give the impression of turquoise, without the sickening feeling that can happen when you use too much of it. I should sell this painting by the pound. It has been scraped down, repainted, scraped again, repainted, totally changing the light, time of day, and mood. Finally, the struggle worth it! It is now one of my favorites.
